Discussion:
how to Create Override for Memory Pool Non Pages Byte

Hello,

We have been receiving quite a number of alerts for the Memory Pool
Non-Paged Bytes Monitor.
I tried to set an over ride for the Memory Pool Non-Paged Monitor, but not
sure how I could configure this. The exchange admins are requesting to change
the thresholds to 100MB.. and I don't see anywhere on the override for this
monitor that takes the size..

Can someone please guide me as how I could override this alert for the
group I have created? thanks in advance..

The alert that gets generated is --
"The Pool Non Pages Bytes is outside the calculated baseline. The current
value is 46332586.56474"

The Pool Non Page Bytes Monitor in the Exchange 2003 MP uses self tuning
thresholds. Basically it learns how your Exchange server behaves for the
performance counter and then raises an alert when your server deviates from
this learned curve. Because it is a self tuning threshold you can't set a
hard threshold for the alert on the monitor specifically, you can only
change the monitors sensitivity.

I would recommend looking at
http://www.systemcenterforum.org/uncategorized/alternate-exchange-2003-queue-monitoring-techniques-in-opsmgr-2007-configs-caveats/,
it is a little outdated but does describe a similar issue and how to create
your own monitor which can have thresholds as opposed to the self tuning
threshold. Instead of Exchange Queue you should set the target object type
as Exchange Database.

Thanks Steve.

I checked the link, but that is more for the queue monitoring..
Do you know what figures I need to put for the inner and outer sensitivity
for this monitor?

Thanks

Hello Sam,

There is a good blog post about that at http://blogs.technet.com/kevinholman/archive/2008/03/19/self-tuning-thresholds-love-and-hate.aspx

I would suggest following the steps in the link and set up a threshold
monitor instead of using the self tuning threshold. That way you can set
the threshold at a level that you would like to be alerted at.

If you want to stick with the self tuning threshold try
http://blogs.technet.com/kevinholman/archive/2008/03/19/self-tuning-thresholds-love-and-hate.aspx
for some more information about understanding the sensitivity of the STTs.
